It is a rare thing these days to receive mail, that is, other than bills, your taxes, bank statements or advertisements. Okay, so what I meant to say is that it's a rare thing these days to receive mail that means something to you. Email is easy, Skype even easier. I don't know what I would do without either, other than feel sad and lonely. But, to receive a letter or a postcard or something important is always a happy surprise. Luckily, my parents are REALLY good about sending things, especially to the boys (thanks guys!). Today, however, I got a great surprise, my address change and renewal came through with the New Yorker, and I got seven all at once. Now, I'm going to make some tea, get cozy and decide where to begin.

  1. Hey,

My mom sent me a package from Canada and it took 3 months to get here. When it arrived it had been opened an dmarked up with red pen and some sort of black wax and sealed up again. My husband says its all for security reasons. Anyway it took so long to recieve these items, that I decided to just wait until my mom arrives in January to get my mail from Canada. Thank God for internet and email, I would go crazy waiting fro the Indian version of the Pony Express to send words of the New World!!!lol Welcome to Delhi by the way.

  2. So, I have all the same New Yorkers sitting on my nightstand. One, what does cover with the woman staring at the limited burger choices meant to you? Two, where in the world do you find time to actually open the New Yorkers and read them? Lordy, by the time I get in bed, I don't have enough brain cells to read anymore. Three, someday we'll discuss all these things and laugh at how out of touch we were at one point, right?

  3. Finally, why don't you email me your address? Maybe I can mail you something other than a bill.

  4. Hi Linda, Thanks for your message. So far we've been pretty luckily with the Indian Post. Believe it or not, we've experienced worst in the South Pacific!

  5. Blythe...One, the limited menu choice actually looks similar to menu choice at Macdo here so it didn't catch my eye. Two, I pretty much force myself to read at night before passing out in bed. It's the only moment I have to myself. Three, definitely--and over a good bottle of wine!
    Address to come...

  6. Hi again,

I know what you mean I lived in Rarotonga, Cook Islands and it took 4.5 months to get my mail. I was back in Canada when my co-worker called to let me know my letters arrived from my mother, she asked if she wanted me to send them back! I told her not to bother. When I was on the Island internet and Long Distance were so expensive that emailing people was like writing a letter done, once a week and the letter was super long!!!!

But the worst for me was Tromso, Norway in the Artic circle, when my mom went to send a package they told her dont bother, what ever the value of the parcel can never be worth the cost it was going to be to send it over to me, so I had to go without some of my fave books, until my neice came to visit me.

By the way, nice blog. How old is your baby? My son is 7 months, they look about the same size.

  7. Linda,
Wow! You've lived in some far-flung places. Must have been very interesting, except for the lack of mail part. At least in Delhi, there's no problem with the internet:) My little one is nine months, very close in age to yours.

  8. Caitlin! Thanks for the birthday wishes :) Have you met my friend from college, Amy Yee, yet? She's a journalist living in Delhi and I think you guys would hit it off...like you, she has lived all over the world and she would be a good person to meet. She has an article in the Sunday NYT. I think I emailed you both a while back and she's on FB too. Let me know if you want me to do a re-introduction. xox
